When we hope, we usually hope for the wrong thing. We yearn for tomorrow and the progress it represents. But yesterday was once tomorrow, and where was the progress in that? or... we yearn for yesterday, for what was or might have been. but as we are yearning, the past becomes the present, so the past is merely a yearning for second chances. live for today. experience every moment as it comes and dont lose sight of what is important - family, friends, love and your health. sensei

Through KATA knowledge was passed down from generation to generation and are the textbook still for Shotokan. KATA is the foundation that teaches the body about stances, movements, and the principles of using hands and legs. KATA teaches breathing and tranquility, secureness and rythm, fighting spirit and power of decision. KATA is not merely a simple training method but is in fact an austere training form. It is a fine, classical way of learning based on the experiences of the battlefield during the fight for life and death. KATA is comparable to the games of Shogi (japanese chess) and always starts and ends with a bow. KATA is not an accumulation of basic techniques but is constantly flowing like circulating blood and must be filled with life. Strict adherence to the following is therefore essential... strength and weakness of power, slowness and quickness of technique plus extension and contraction of the body. Schlatt sensei

Can we all spare a few moments thought and prayer for all those who are less fortunate than ourselves? Even when our own troubles seem huge there are people everywhere who are really in trouble. Drug addicts and Alcoholics living rough on our streets with no where to sleep. We are getting into that time of year when the weather is becoming quite harsh. As we grumble about whether there is anything decent to watch on telly or who is going to take the dog out for his nightly walk in the rain... just think of all those sleeping in derelict or disused buildings with no light, heat or decent food. Thank you. Sensei
Posted 17th November 2010
Dont save your energy in order to last the entire class. Give everything you have in each strike. If you cannot keep training after one set of kihon techniques or one bout of kumite as a result of giving all you have, I am happy with that. This is how we overcome or improve our physical and mental strength, I believe. But when we hit our physical limitations, do we merely give up? Strong determination and belief will keep you going. That is all that we have. Allow your mental/will/determination power to take over, and your body can keep going. You will be surprised how much you can do after you think you hit your own physical limitation. However... to know your limitations you must first take yourself to the outer limits of your own personal endurance and flexibility. Sensei

Maybe we have different clothes, drive different cars and live in different houses. Maybe we have different coloured skiin or hair or speak different languages. That is all on the surface. Underneath we are all the same... Human Beings. It is this that binds us all together. It is this that makes it possible for us to understand each other and show empathy for another person. It is this that enables us to develop friendships with people we would not normally associate or communicate. Sensei
